Technology

At SaabTeece one of our core values is that of innovation. We love that technology has allowed us to build a best-in-class App Stack.

Open API

We became Xero Partners in 2009, back when people were still a little unsure about ‘the cloud’ and most people didn’t even own a smart phone yet! Xero revolutionised the accounting tech industry by building an open API (Application Programming Interface), allowing other software companies to build a connection with Xero.

Xero is not trying to be everything your business needs, for some businesses maybe Xero alone is enough, for others, like ours, we have added several different, integrated, apps to our stack so that we can make the most of technology, streamlining the day-to-day and dedicating our efforts and expertise on our clients.

We also want to ensure that the technology we use gives our clients a great end user experience too. We know that signing a tax return or paying an invoice can be quite a mundane task, so the more streamlined we can make this process, the better the client experience.

App Stack

Our app stack is continuously improving, it will never be a set and forget. And whilst apps may remain on the stack, there are always developments within the apps themselves and improvements in the connections between them.

Single Source Of Truth & Integrations

At SaabTeece we are striving for a single source of truth, with as minimal data entry and duplication as possible. For example, if a client moves house, and we need to update their address, we should only have to record this change in one system, which will flow through to every other system. And whilst we are not there yet on all systems, and may never be with the rate of development we have seen from the ATO, this is what we strive for. Eliminating the data entry not only removes the risk of human error, but allows the person you employed to complete that task to do other tasks and more engaging work.

Finding The Right App

There are over 1,000 apps in the Xero App Marketplace and whilst there are customer reviews, filters and searches you can do to try and find the app that solves a problem for you, we would not recommend heading down that worm hole.

Every app on our app stack undergoes a detailed review process; it is important that we have a clear understanding of what it can do, what it cannot, and how it impacts our existing processes and systems.

Most apps we have come to our attention by way of product demonstration at industry events and some by referral from others in the industry. Before implementing anything new, we check to make sure there hasn’t been an update in any of our existing apps that does what the new app does.

Change Management

The most important part of implementation is change management. Depending on how big the problem your app is solving, or how many of your team are impacted, will likely influence the amount of change management that needs to take place. At a minimum its key that you follow these steps:

  • Assess the need for change.
  • Choose the right technology.
  • Create a change management team (including appointing your app champion).
  • Develop a communication plan.
  • Identify potential risks and challenges.
  • Monitor and evaluate the change (this is a continuous process).

Each App should have an app champion, they should know the functions and features inside and out, they become the “go-to” for the team for that app.

The SaabTeece Way

At SaabTeece we have a designated “Tech Team”, four of our team members who meet monthly to discuss:

  • Developments in our existing apps and how we can utilise any new features.
  • Assess problems that may need to be solved with new tech.
  • Discuss how technology can improve our current systems and procedures.

We are excited by what we see ahead in the area of technology, great things are to come with further development of AI (artificial intelligence) and machine learning. And whilst we recall there was a time that the development of accounting tech worried some accountants they would be out of a job, we are excited that development in tech has removed the mundane from our day to day to allow us to do more meaningful work engaging with our clients.
